Tom Gilmore's article "The Importance of Linking Leadership Succession, Strategy, and Governance," has been published on the NonProfit Quarterly journal's website.

The article asserts that the three processes of strategy, succession, and governance are linked in ways that often create the following three dilemmas:

  • Misalignment between the board’s readiness and leadership succession.

  • Misalignment of the strategy with succession.

  • Mismatch between the board’s capabilities and strategic development.

Case studies are used to discuss these dilemmas and the article includes five tips for navigating the interdependent processes of succession, strategy and governance.
